Art of Racing Preakness illustration

This project was a nationwide submission to the Art of Racing Preakness Stakes. The Preakness Stakes is the second stop on the road to the Triple crown. Maryland Collage Institute of Art partners with the Preakness Stakes Race and calls for artists. When beginning this project I researched all about horse racing and the Prilico Race Track that this contest takes place. After much research and reference collecting I decided which elements and symbols were most important to include.

The bright colors and patterns of the Jockey's uniform is present in the background. Also included is the excitement of the race seen in the dynamic composition. As well as the legacy of past winners of the race are seen in the text of the background. And finally, the flower dust seen under the horses hooves as he is running is

'The Dust of a Winner', since the black-eyed Suzan's seen in the illustration are the flowers that adorn the champion horse of the Preakness Race. This piece was named 'The Dust of a Winner' because of that fact.

This project was judged against over 200 other submissions and received the honor or Top Ten. Check out my initial sketches, mood board and videos of my drawing process below.
