This project was an exploration of a master work by Holly Warnbs (below). She did a piece in oil pastel called "The Exotic Woman" and I wanted to do a Replication, Value Study and a twist on it. To the left is my twist on the color palette and the images below are labeled to show the other steps of my process. When studying another artist's work or a master I think it is critically important to push beyond a simple replication. To replicate is not a bad thing to study and strengthen your own abilities but I think you MUST "make it your own" in some way. To stop after replication you not only loose the opportunity to further explore but you also loose the creativity and create bad habits. Yes my final image is still extremely similar to the original but there are still aspects I added or changed to divert the from the Master Work.
